Under heavy use most foam rollers will start to break down as the roller is continually compressed by the user's weight. The cells that makes up the foam fatigues and breaks. Eventually, the roller goes out of round and often the roller is just replaced.

The foam roller is an essential tool for pilates core, ab and back stabilization and strengthening.
